Sanibel Island located off the coast of Southwest Florida is just west of Fort Myers. The Island approximately 12 miles long and 4 miles wide is known for its shelling by avid shell collectors around the world.  Why is the shelling on this island so exceptional?  Sanibel Island’s geographical orientation is unique; the island is perpendicular rather than parallel to the coastline of Southwest Florida.  This orientation allows the island to act as a scoop and collect shells along its many beaches.  .
